Word for the Day     a teacher's influence

BEING ME   Being a teacher
I became a teacher by default. After Grade 11 in secondary school, I got my first job in an office. But I was so bored that I left and went back to school for another year. One day, someone from the education department came into our classroom with some paperwork to be filled in by those interested in teaching. Because I filled in the paperwork, I found myself in Teachers' College, not really understanding where I was headed.  I have absolutely loved the time I have spent teaching primary school children. Hubby is also a teacher of primary school children, as are  three of our six children!

The characteristic that comes to mind when I think of teachers is the desire to have a positive influence on others.

Was Moses a teacher?
Moses taught the Hebrew people how to live as God ordained for them.

He taught them to introduce and honour cultural celebrations, thus enhancing their identity. He taught them to celebrate a festival to God three times a year:

The Feast of Unleavened Bread, when for seven days they ate bread made without yeast;

The Feast of Harvest celebrating the first-fruits of their crops; and

The Feast of Ingathering celebrating their gathering of the end of year crops.

Moses also taught many "life standards".
One that comes to mind is Moses teaching the people to rest one day out of seven - a sabbath for the Hebrew people. Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.... the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. Exodus 20:8,11 But they weren't meant to be legalistic about their Sabbath to the extent that their way of life was no longer undergirded by the law of love. It was on a Sabbath day that Jesus prayed for a woman who had been bent over and crippled for 18 years. Immediately she straightened up and praised God. The Jewish synagogue ruler was indignant (well, more than indignant really!) This story is recorded in Luke chapter 13.
Another "life standard" that comes to mind which Moses taught, was that the people were not to come to God empty-handed......  I will have to do some considering of that one! I don't believe the size of what we bring is what counts, but it is the gesture and obedience of an offering that is important. Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 2 Corinthians 9:7

Garden    Chives

Chives, or Allium schoenoprasum, are a versatile and healthy herb that can be used in a variety of dishes.  Add chopped leaves to sauces, vegetable dips, soups, salads and to season fish. Because chives have a tendency to become stringy if overcooked, add in the last few minutes of cooking.
Flower buds can be used as a garnish and in Asian cooking.

vitamins and minerals in chives

Because many of us don't eat enough fruits and vegetables, incorporating chives into one's diet can help boost intake of several vitamins and minerals - potassium for cardiac function and nerve impulse, vitamin C as a potent antioxidant, important for wound healing, collagen formation and keeping the immune system strong, folate which is good for pregnant women, beta-corotene (a form of vitamin A) which is a potent antioxidant, and vitamin K which is vital for blood clotting and bone health.

Garlic chives are believed to be a companion plant for roses and have a repellent effect on aphids.

Division every two years improves the vigour of the clumps.
Do not allow the plants to set seed unless you want to save seed as this will decrease the vigour of the clump.
Seed will only remain viable for one year.

May we use our healthy herbs daily to add vitamins and minerals to our diets.
